Our pick

1. Polar Recovery Sauna Cube

Thermowood cabin, electric

9.4/10

The Sauna Cube is a 45mm thermowood cabin that arrives with everything it needs to get hot: a 6kW Harvia Vega heater, L-shaped alder benches, a bucket, ladle and thermometer, and two headrests. Thermowood is timber heat-treated so it takes on far less moisture and moves less with the weather, which is why the walls go up without an insulated lining and still hold 80 to 100°C on a January night.

It costs £4,999.99 with a wooden front, or £5,999.99 with a full glass front. A 6kW Harvia Vega bought on its own is £366 with stones, and a design-led heater with a separate controller runs past £1,000, so the cabins that look cheaper on a listing often stop looking cheaper once a heater is added. Nothing else here seats five with the heater included for less.

Budget for two things beyond the price. The Vega needs a dedicated 32A supply, so an electrician is part of the job, and the 600kg kit is delivered flat-packed off a tail-lift and wheeled as close to the base as access allows. Polar's own carpenters will build it for a quoted fee; the warranty is 2 years with professional fitting and 1 year if you build it yourself.

Buy it if

  • You have a level patch about 2.05m wide and 1.6m deep
  • Three to five people will use it together
  • You want the heater, benches and accessories in one price

Skip it if

  • You want a wood fire (the 6 to 8 person Cube offers one)
  • Running a 32A circuit to the garden is off the table
  • You'd rather pay more to have it delivered built

2. Auroom Mira

Glass-front cabin, electric

9.0/10

The Mira is the cabin people photograph. Its whole front is tempered glass, the shell is thermally modified spruce and the interior is thermo-aspen, lit from under the benches. It comes as a kit in two sizes, the Mira S for up to two people and the Mira L for up to four, in eight colours.

Auroom belongs to the Thermory group, one of the largest producers of thermally modified timber, and the joinery shows it. The difficulty is buying one. There's no UK list price, the heater is specified per build, and dealer quotes for an imported kit land above the Sauna Cube for the same number of seats.

Buy it if

  • The sauna will be in view of the house
  • You want a full glass wall rather than a glazed door
  • Design matters more to you than price per seat

Skip it if

  • You need a firm price before you enquire
  • You want the heater inside the quoted price
  • Your plot is shaded, so the glass earns nothing

3. CenturaHeat 4 Person Steam Sauna

Hemlock cabin, electric

8.7/10

Four seats and an 8kW Harvia stove for £4,200. The cabin is Canadian hemlock on a 1.8m square footprint and stands 2m tall, comfortably under the 2.5m height limit for an outbuilding near a boundary.

Per heated seat, this is the cheapest serious cabin on the list. What the saving costs is wall build: hemlock panelling is thinner than 45mm thermowood, so it gives heat back to a cold night faster and uses more electricity to hold temperature. The 8kW stove also wants a 40A supply, a step above the usual 32A run.

Buy it if

  • Four people at the lowest complete price
  • Most of your sessions will be spring to autumn
  • You want the stove included and a short shopping list

Skip it if

  • You'll use it nightly through winter
  • Your consumer unit has no room for a 40A circuit
  • You've set your heart on thermowood

4. Polar Recovery Sauna Cube 6-8 Person

Thermowood cabin, electric or wood

8.6/10

The 6 to 8 person Cube stretches the same 45mm thermowood cabin to 2.4m deep, which buys a second run of bench and room for six to eight people. It ships with a 9kW Harvia Cilindro pillar heater, or with a 13kW Harvia M3 wood-burning stove for £1,500 more.

It's £8,499.99 with a wooden front and the electric heater, £9,999.99 with the wood stove, and £1,000 more for a glass front. The wood-fired version is the one to look at if the garden has no power: no circuit and no electrician, just a flue and dry logs. The electric version wants a dedicated 50A supply.

Buy it if

  • Six or more regular users
  • You want a wood-fired cabin from UK stock
  • A level patch about 2.05m wide and 2.4m deep

Skip it if

  • Two to four users, where the standard Cube is £3,500 less
  • No room for a 50A circuit and no appetite for logs
  • Your plot can't take a 2.4m-deep cabin

Best barrel

5. Layzee Living 200cm Barrel Sauna

Barrel, wood-fired or electric

8.4/10

A 2m-long barrel that fits where a square cabin won't. The spruce kit is £4,585 without a heater, or £4,995 in thermowood, and you choose the heat: £5,495 all-in with a 6.8kW Harvia Cilindro, or £5,695 with a Harvia M3 wood stove. Barrels heat quickly for their size because there are no corners to warm.

Layzee rates it for up to four, but the curve costs shoulder room at both ends, so four is a squeeze where the Sauna Cube seats five on flat walls. For a side return, or for the ritual of feeding a fire while it rains, that's a fair trade, and delivery is included to most of the UK.

Buy it if

  • Your garden is long and narrow
  • You want the option of a wood stove
  • Two or three regular users

Skip it if

  • You want to lie flat on a bench
  • You want the heater inside the headline price
  • You're buying purely on price per seat

Best with a shower

6. Polar Recovery Cove

Thermowood cabin with outdoor shower

8.3/10

The Cove is the Sauna Cube scaled up, with a covered outdoor shower built onto the side, so the cold rinse between rounds is one step from the door. It's 45mm thermowood under an aluminium roof, with 2.18m-deep benches for four to eight people, and it ships with a 9kW Harvia Cilindro or, for £1,000 more, a 13kW wood-burning stove.

At £17,995.95 it's the most expensive cabin here, and it should be judged against garden rooms rather than sauna kits: a bespoke cabin with a plumbed shower costs more and takes months. The Cove is in stock on a 1 to 2 week delivery. Plan for a 50A supply for the 9kW heater, a water connection for the shower and a base 3.2m wide.

Buy it if

  • You want the hot and cold cycle in one building
  • Groups of four to eight
  • You want it installed this month, not next spring

Skip it if

  • Your budget is under £10,000
  • There's no water supply near the spot

7. Palmako Eir Compact Garden Sauna

44mm log kit cabin, electric

7.9/10

£3,890 buys the Eir, a compact kit cabin in 44mm spruce logs with a 6kW Narvi heater, stones and roofing felt included and free delivery to mainland UK. It stands on a 1.8m by 1.6m footprint and is 2.25m tall.

It's the cheapest complete cabin on this list, and the saving over the Sauna Cube is about £1,100. For that you get two or three seats instead of five, you do the building, and untreated spruce needs a coat of treatment every year. If the budget stops below £4,000, this is the one to get.

Buy it if

  • Your budget stops below £4,000
  • You're happy to assemble and treat timber
  • Two or three users

Skip it if

  • Four or more people
  • You want a fitting service and a fitted warranty

What an outdoor sauna really costs

The listed price is where the number starts. These are the additions that turn a £4,999.99 cabin into a £7,000 project, and every one of them can be priced before you order.

CostTypicalWhen it applies
Heater, if not included£366–£1,800Barrels, shells and design-led kits
Dedicated circuit£300–£800Every electric heater
Level base£400–£1,500Every outdoor cabin
Professional assembly£1,200–£2,000Flat-pack cabins, optional
Timber treatment£40–£80 a yearOften a warranty condition

Running cost depends on the heater. A 6kW heater draws about 6kWh in an hour at full power, which is roughly £1.58 at the 26.32p per kWh price cap in force from October to December 2026. Thick thermowood walls cut that, because the thermostat switches the heater off for longer once the cabin is up to temperature, and the cost per session by heater size is worth checking before you choose between a 6kW and a 9kW cabin.

Planning permission and the 2.5m rule

In England most garden saunas go up without planning permission, as outbuildings under permitted development. The rule that shapes the market is height: within 2m of a boundary an outbuilding must stay under 2.5m tall, according to the Planning Portal's outbuilding guidance. Every cabin on this page is under it, the Sauna Cube at 2.1m and the Cove at 2.45m.

Permitted development doesn't apply to listed buildings, and it's restricted in conservation areas, national parks and on land in front of the house. Flats and maisonettes don't have permitted development rights at all, so the cases where you do need permission are worth ruling out first.

Power decides more than the cabin does

An electric sauna heater is wired to its own circuit, and running a new circuit to the garden is notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations, so a registered electrician signs it off. The heater size sets the supply: the Sauna Cube's 6kW Vega wants a 32A circuit, the CenturaHeat's 8kW stove 40A, and the 9kW heaters in the larger Cubes and the Cove 50A.

If the far end of the garden has no realistic route for a cable, there are two ways round it. A wood-burning stove needs no circuit at all, only a flue and safe clearances, and an outdoor infrared cabin runs on a 32A commando plug rather than a hard-wired heater.

Thermowood, cedar or spruce

Thermowood is pine or spruce heated to around 200°C, which changes the timber so it takes on less water and moves less. It's why the Polar cabins use 45mm walls with no insulation layer and still hold temperature. Western red cedar, used in most barrel saunas, smells the part and resists rot naturally, and weathers to silver unless treated. Untreated spruce is the budget option: it works, but it needs treating every year and is the first to show its age.

Questions buyers ask

Do you need planning permission for an outdoor sauna?

Usually not in England, if it counts as an outbuilding under permitted development: under 2.5m tall within 2m of a boundary, not in front of the house and not covering more than half the garden. Listed buildings, flats and some protected areas are the exceptions.

How much does an outdoor sauna cost in the UK?

Complete cabins with a heater start around £3,000 for a small hemlock cabin, £3,900 for a self-build log kit and £4,700 to £5,000 for a thermowood cabin. Add £300 to £800 for the electrics and £400 to £1,500 for a base, so a typical garden sauna lands between £5,500 and £7,500 all-in.

What is the best outdoor sauna for the money?

We rate the Polar Recovery Sauna Cube at £4,999.99 as the best value per seat with thermowood walls, because the 6kW Harvia heater and the benches are in the price. The CenturaHeat 4 Person is cheaper at £4,200 but uses thinner hemlock walls.

Does an outdoor sauna need a concrete base?

It needs a level base that won't move, and a concrete slab is the most common choice. Compacted sub-base with paving slabs and ground screw foundations also work for lighter cabins, as long as the base is level and drains away from the timber.

Wood-fired or electric?

Electric is easier to live with: timers, a thermostat and no fuel. Wood-fired needs no electrician and gives a softer, more traditional heat, but takes longer to warm up and needs a flue, safe clearances and dry logs.
