The best wood-fired outdoor saunas

Six garden saunas heated by a log stove, from a £5,695 barrel to an £18,995.95 cabin with its own shower, scored on whether the stove suits the room, what comes in the box for the flue and what the smoke rules allow. None of them needs a circuit for the heater.

Our pick

1. Finnmark Large Barrel Sauna (6-8 Person), Wood-Fired

Thermo-spruce barrel, wood-fired

9.2/10

Finnmark's wood-burning option on its Large Barrel is the wood-fired sauna we'd buy, because it's the most complete stove package here: a Narvi Kuru 20, heat shielding, the flue kit and stones, for £8,859.99 with the barrel. The Kuru 20 is rated for rooms of 10 to 20m³ and the barrel's room is 11m³, so the stove is sized for it rather than borrowed from a smaller sauna.

The barrel is 40mm thermo-spruce, 2.25m across and nearly 3m long, with two 2.7m facing benches for 6 to 8 people. Finnmark's own advice is that a wood stove takes bench space, so plan on six. Delivery to mainland UK is free by Moffett forklift, and it's a self-build kit unless you book Finnmark's assembly service.

The Kuru's published clearances to anything combustible are generous: 500mm in front of the stove, 250mm to the sides and back and 1,350mm above. In a timber barrel that's what the heat shielding is for, and it's why we'd buy the kit rather than piece one together.

Buy it if

  • Six to eight people
  • You want the flue and shielding in one order
  • A plot about 3m by 2.3m

Skip it if

  • You'd switch to electric later (it's three-phase only)
  • You want an L-shaped bench to lie on
  • You'd rather not build a barrel yourself

2. Layzee Living Timber Cube Sauna XL, Wood-Fired

Thermowood cabin, wood-fired

8.9/10

Layzee's Timber Cube XL with a Harvia M3 is £6,895, which is £3,104.99 less than the Polar Cube with the same stove on almost the same footprint, 2.05m by 2.4m. Layzee only sells the stove in the XL, because the smaller cube has no room for it, and the XL's room is 1.96 × 1.96 × 2.2m, about 8.45m³, inside the M3's 6 to 13m³ range.

The difference is in the walls: 28mm thermowood rather than 45mm, so more of the fire's heat goes through the timber on a cold night and you'll feed the stove more often. Layzee rates it for up to 6 and quotes a heat-up time of 30 minutes to an hour, and flat-pack delivery is included to most of the UK.

Layzee calls the build fairly technical and will fit it at extra cost. Its listing doesn't say what flue comes with the M3, so ask before you order.

Buy it if

  • A wood-fired cube for under £7,000
  • Up to six users
  • You're handy with a technical kit

Thickest walls

3. Polar Recovery Sauna Cube 6-8 Person, Wood-Fired

Thermowood cabin, wood-fired

8.8/10

The 6 to 8 person Sauna Cube with a Harvia M3 has the thickest walls of any wood-fired cabin here. It's the same 45mm thermowood room as the electric version, 200 × 196 × 218.5cm inside or about 8.6m³, with L-shaped alder benches and a black Katepal roof, and the stove takes the place of the 9kW heater for £1,500 more.

The M3 is Harvia's best-known wood stove. Polar lists it at 13kW; Harvia's own figure is 16.5kW for rooms of 6 to 13m³, which puts this room comfortably inside the range. It's £9,999.99 with a wooden front or £10,999.99 with glass, with free delivery, made to order in 3 to 4 weeks.

No 50A circuit and no electrician, which is the point. What Polar's listing doesn't spell out is the flue, so ask what length of chimney comes in the box and whether a heat shield is included before you order. The warranty is 2 years if Polar's fitters build it, at £1,200 to £2,000, or 1 year self-built.

  • You want thermowood rather than a barrel

Best barrel

4. Hekla Barrel 250, Wood-Fired

Thermo-spruce barrel, wood-fired

8.4/10

The Hekla Barrel 250 with a Harvia Linear 18 Compact is £9,400 from Outdoor Living, chimney kit and 40kg of stones included. Harvia rates the Linear 18 at 14.3kW for rooms of 5 to 18m³, and it heats a thermo-spruce barrel with two facing 1.94m benches for six and a 35cm covered porch.

Outdoor Living tells buyers to light it about an hour before a session and to allow about an armful of logs. The wood option costs £1,501 more than the 9kW electric version, which is the price of not needing a 40A circuit. Kerbside delivery is £149 and building it on your base is £899.

The barrel is 2.23m by 2.5m and 2.34m tall, and the warranty is 2 years from Hekla. Outdoor Living's own FAQ tells buyers to check local rules on wood burners and smoke before ordering, which is good advice for every sauna on this page.

  • A chimney kit in the price

5. Layzee Living 200cm Barrel Sauna, Wood-Fired

Spruce barrel, wood-fired

8.3/10

£5,695 buys Layzee's 2m barrel in Scandinavian spruce with a Harvia M3 stove, delivered flat-packed to most of the UK. It's the cheapest way onto this page by £1,200, and in thermowood it's £6,175.

The barrel is 2.05m across, 2m long and 2.15m tall, with 42mm walls, and Layzee rates it for up to four. Four is a squeeze where the curve meets the ends, so think of it as a sauna for two or three. Layzee quotes a top temperature of 90°C and a heat-up time of 30 minutes to an hour.

Plain spruce needs treating to keep the weather out, so the £480 thermowood upgrade is worth it if the barrel will stand in the open. As with the Layzee cube, ask what flue comes with the stove.

  • Two or three regular users
  • A spot about 2.1m square

Best with a shower

6. Polar Recovery Cove, Wood-Fired

Thermowood cabin with outdoor shower, wood-fired

8.1/10

The Cove with a 13kW Cozy wood-burning stove is £18,995.95, £1,000 more than with the 9kW electric heater. You get the big Polar room, 8.5m³ behind 45mm thermowood, a covered outdoor cold shower on the side and an aluminium roof, for 4 to 8 people, in stock on a 1 to 2 week delivery.

Of everything here it's the one that puts the whole routine, fire, heat and cold rinse, in one building. It's also nearly twice the price of the wood-fired Sauna Cube, and Polar publishes nothing about the stove beyond its 13kW figure, so ask for the stove's manual, its rated room size and the flue details before you order.

The shower still needs a water feed and a drain, and Polar's fitters quote £1,500 to £2,000 to build the cabin. The warranty is 2 years fitted or 1 year self-built.

Buy it if

  • You want the cold rinse a step from the stove
  • Groups of four to eight
  • Delivery this month

  • No water supply near the spot
  • Your budget stops at £10,000

Flue and clearance distances for a sauna stove

A wood stove needs space around it that an electric heater doesn't. Each maker publishes minimum distances to combustible material, and in a timber sauna that means the walls, the benches and the ceiling. These are the published figures for the stoves on this page.

StoveFrontSidesBehindAbove
Harvia M3300mm250mm300mm1,200mm
Harvia Linear 18 Compact300mm92mm92mm1,300mm
Narvi Kuru 20500mm250mm250mm1,350mm

The figures come from Harvia's pages for the M3 wood-burning heater and the Linear 18 Compact, and Finnmark's listing for the Narvi Kuru 14 and 20. Heat shielding lets a maker work closer to the timber, which is why Finnmark's kit includes it.

The flue matters as much as the stove. It has to pass through the roof with the right collar, rise clear of the roofline and keep sparks away from the timber, so ask every seller which flue parts are in the price. Polar and Layzee don't say on their listings; Finnmark and Outdoor Living include a flue or chimney kit. A wood-burning sauna heater bought on its own needs the same parts.

Stove size and sauna room volume

Wood stoves are rated like electric heaters, by the room volume they can heat. A room near the top of a stove's range takes longer to warm and asks for more logs; a room near the bottom heats quickly. Output figures help less than ranges, because makers quote them differently: Polar lists the M3 at 13kW and Harvia at 16.5kW.

Measure inside height × width × depth to get your own figure. The Polar and Layzee cubes are also sold with 9kW and 6kW electric heaters, which changes the circuit you need more than the bench space, and both feature among our large outdoor saunas for 6 to 8 people.

Logs, heat-up time and smoke rules

Plan on lighting the stove about an hour before you want to sit in it. Layzee quotes 30 minutes to an hour to heat its barrels and cubes, and Outdoor Living tells Hekla buyers to light the fire about an hour ahead and allow an armful of logs a session.

Burn dry wood. In England, firewood sold in units under 2m³ can't have a moisture content above 20%, under the Air Quality (Domestic Solid Fuels Standards) (England) Regulations 2020, which is what the Ready to Burn label on bagged logs certifies. Wet wood gives less heat and more smoke.

Check whether you live in a smoke control area before you buy. In one, a stove on a roof chimney, such as in a summerhouse, can only burn authorised fuel unless it's a Defra-exempt appliance. Wood isn't an authorised fuel, and in England smoke from a chimney can bring a penalty of up to £300, according to GOV.UK's smoke control rules. Your council's environmental health team can tell you whether your address is covered.

Outside a smoke control area, neighbours still have a remedy. Smoke from premises that is a nuisance counts as a statutory nuisance under section 79 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990, so site the flue away from windows and washing lines next door. The cabin itself follows the same garden sauna planning rules whichever heater you choose.

Questions buyers ask

How long does a wood-fired sauna take to heat up?

About 30 minutes to an hour. Layzee quotes 30 minutes to an hour for its wood-fired barrels and cubes, and Outdoor Living tells Hekla buyers to light the stove about an hour before a session.

Can you use a wood-fired sauna in a smoke control area?

Only with a Defra-exempt stove, because wood isn't an authorised fuel. In England smoke from a chimney in a smoke control area can bring a penalty of up to £300, and your council can confirm whether your address is in one.

Is a wood-fired sauna cheaper to run than electric?

It can be, and it saves the cost of a dedicated circuit. A 9kW electric heater costs about £2.37 an hour at full power at the October to December 2026 price cap of 26.32p per kWh, while a stove costs whatever you pay for an armful of dry logs a session.

What size wood stove does a sauna need?

One whose rated room volume covers your sauna's volume. The Harvia M3 is rated for 6 to 13m³ and the Narvi Kuru 20 for 10 to 20m³, so measure height, width and depth inside and pick a stove with that figure inside its range.

Do you need planning permission for a wood-fired sauna?

Usually not, if the cabin counts as a permitted development outbuilding, which near a boundary means under 2.5m tall. Ask the seller for the height with the flue fitted and check it with your council, and check the smoke control rules separately.
