Our pick

1. Layzee Living 200cm Barrel Sauna

Barrel, wood-fired or electric

9.0/10

The Layzee 200 is a 2m-long barrel, 2.05m across and 2.15m tall on its feet, with 42mm staves and 28mm end walls. You choose the timber and the heat: £4,585 in spruce without a heater, £5,495 with a 6.8kW Harvia Cilindro or £5,695 with a Harvia M3 wood stove, and £410 to £480 more in thermowood.

That choice is why it ranks first. It's the cheapest barrel here that offers both a wood stove and an electric heater, and £5,975 for thermowood with the 6.8kW Cilindro, delivered flat-packed, undercuts the other thermo-spruce barrel on this page by more than £1,200. Layzee rates it for four, which is two a side, sitting up.

Two things count against it. Layzee calls the flat-pack a fairly technical build and charges extra to build it on site, and the listing doesn't state a warranty. The current delivery estimate is 21 December, and heat-up takes 30 minutes to an hour depending on the weather.

Buy it if

  • You want the choice of wood or electric
  • Thermowood staves under £6,000 with a heater
  • Four people sitting up

Skip it if

  • You need it before late December
  • You want a stated warranty
  • You'd rather not build a technical kit

2. Hekla Barrel 210

Thermo-spruce barrel with porch

8.7/10

The Hekla Barrel 210 adds the details that make a barrel easier to live with: a 35cm covered porch so you don't open the door straight into rain, three stainless steel bands, an 8mm tempered glass door and a choice of half-glass rear window or solid back. The staves are heat-treated thermo-spruce, and the thermo-aspen benches have LED lighting built in.

It's £6,400 for the barrel, £7,199 with a 6.8kW Harvia Cilindro, £7,399 with the 9kW or £8,900 with a Harvia Linear 18 wood burner. The electric heaters are hard-wired, 35A for the 6.8kW and 40A for the 9kW. Two facing benches of about 1.53m seat four.

Hekla gives 2 years on the sauna, the longest stated barrel warranty here, and Outdoor Living will build it on your base and connect the heater for £899. For six, the Barrel 250 adds 41cm of length and 1.94m benches, at £7,899 with a 9kW heater.

Buy it if

  • The barrel will stand in the open all year
  • You want a porch and a rear window
  • You'd like it built and connected for you

Skip it if

  • Your budget stops at £6,000
  • No room for a 35A or 40A circuit

3. Outdoor Living Barrel Sauna 4 Person

Spruce barrel, electric

8.6/10

The cheapest complete four-seat barrel here: £2,999 for the shell, or £3,498 with a Harvia Vega 6kW on dials, and £3,898 with Harvia The Wall 6kW and Wi-Fi. It's 38mm spruce staves held by steel hoops under black asphalt shingles, 1.8m long, with two facing benches of about 1.71m.

The spruce arrives untreated, ready for an exterior stain, and Outdoor Living asks for treatment inside and out twice a year. The door is timber with a glass window rather than full glass, and the Vega is hard-wired on a dedicated 35A supply.

For £1,000 more, the Barrel Sauna Thermo version has 40mm staves, a full-height glass door and backrests on both benches, at £4,498 with the same Vega. Either way the sauna carries a 1-year warranty from Outdoor Living; kerbside delivery is £149, or £899 delivered and built.

Buy it if

  • Four people under £3,500 with a heater
  • You're happy to stain timber twice a year
  • A patch about 1.8m square

Skip it if

  • You want thermowood or cedar

4. Fonteyn Rustic Red Cedar Barrel, 4ft

Cedar barrel, electric

8.3/10

The only cedar barrel here: A-grade western red cedar, 1.25m long and 1.85m across, with a 4.5kW heater and interior lighting included for £3,495, delivered with assembly instructions. Fonteyn describes the cedar as naturally rot-resistant, and it smells the part.

At 1.25m long it seats two sitting up, and it's the cheapest barrel on this page with a heater in the price. Heater upgrades to 6kW, on a 32A supply, or 9kW, on 40A, are available on request.

The 6ft (£4,395, four people) and 8ft (£4,995, six people) come delivered and assembled, but both are backordered today. Both also ship with the same 4.5kW heater as standard, which is small for a 2.45m barrel, so price in the upgrade if you go bigger.

Buy it if

  • Two people and a narrow plot
  • You want cedar staves
  • A heater in the price under £3,500

Skip it if

  • More than two regular users
  • You want it assembled at the 4ft size

5. CenturaHeat 4-6 Person Outdoor Wood Barrel Steam Sauna

Spruce barrel with porch, electric

7.9/10

CenturaHeat's porch barrel is 1.8m across and 2.4m deep including an integrated porch, in Canadian spruce, with a 6kW stove included for £4,767. It's rated for up to six, the cheapest six-seat barrel with a heater on this page, and it's the only one of the five CenturaHeat barrels Pro-Line Direct lists that's in stock today.

The stove runs on manual dials and the barrel needs a hard-wired 32A supply. Six is a squeeze once the porch takes its share of the 2.4m, so plan on four sitting comfortably and six only for friends.

The spruce has to be treated or painted before it goes outside, then re-treated every 1 to 2 years with oils or stains. The listing doesn't state a warranty for this model; CenturaHeat's other outdoor cabins carry 1 year on electrics and 2 years on timber, so confirm it before you order.

Buy it if

  • Six people on a tight budget
  • You want a porch to cool off under
  • You're happy to treat timber

Skip it if

  • You want thermowood or cedar
  • You want the warranty in writing
  • You want app or Wi-Fi control

Barrel or cube for the same money

Two makers on this page sell a barrel and a cube side by side, which makes the shape easy to price. With a comparable heater, the barrel is about £1,300 to £1,500 cheaper for the same or nearly the same seats.

ModelShapePrice with heaterSeatsFootprint
Outdoor Living Barrel 4 PersonBarrel£3,498 (6kW Vega)4180 × 180cm
Outdoor Living CubeCube£4,999 (6.8kW Cilindro)Up to 5235 × 220cm
Hekla Barrel 210Barrel£7,399 (9kW Cilindro)4223 × 209cm
Hekla Cube 210Cube£8,698 (9kW Cilindro)4225 × 209cm

What the cube buys is the bench layout. Cubes run benches in an L, deep enough on the Outdoor Living Cube (73cm) for one person to lie down, and the Hekla Cube 210 adds a double-glazed front that puts it among the glass-front outdoor saunas we rank. A barrel puts two benches face to face, everyone sits upright, and the walls curve in above your shoulders.

What the barrel buys is price and a smaller room to heat for the seats you get. Three of the five barrels here come in under £5,000 with a heater, so they belong on the same shortlist as the outdoor saunas under £5,000.

How long a barrel needs to be for your group

A barrel's length includes both end walls and any porch, so the room inside is shorter than the headline figure. We count 70cm of bench per adult sitting upright, the same allowance we use for 2-person outdoor saunas, with one bench on each side.

Hekla Barrel 250250cm with porch2 × 194cm64, or 6 snug

By that measure a 4-person barrel seats four, and a 6-person barrel seats four with room and six who know each other well. Lying flat needs close to 2m of bench, and of the barrels that list bench lengths, only the Hekla Barrel 250 comes near it at 1.94m. For six or more regular users, compare the barrels with large outdoor saunas, which put a second run of bench along the side wall.

Stave timber, steel bands and upkeep

A barrel is held together by tension: the staves interlock and steel bands pull them tight, while the timber swells and shrinks underneath with the weather. That makes the timber matter more than on a cube. The ThermoWood handbook from the International ThermoWood Association reports that after 72 hours soaking, untreated spruce reached 22% moisture against 10 to 12% for thermally modified spruce, and that rot fungi become active above 20%.

Outdoor Living's care notes ask for sauna products rated above 110°C, and CenturaHeat's treatment guide says never to use exterior paint or sealant inside, only paraffin oil, sauna wax or bare wood. Even thermo-spruce takes on some water: Hekla's Barrel 210 listing says a little rain can seep into the staves in heavy weather and dries out when the sauna is heated, and that without enough band tension the staves can open up.

So check the bands each spring and autumn, after the wettest and driest stretches of the year, and take up any slack. Barrels stand on cradles rather than a flat floor, and Outdoor Living asks for concrete or paving under them, not grass or soil, which is the same level, firm base any garden sauna needs.

Questions buyers ask

Are barrel saunas better than square saunas?

They're cheaper for the same seats: from the same maker, a barrel with a heater costs about £1,300 to £1,500 less than the matching cube. A cube gives you L-shaped benches, room to lie down and the option of a full glass front.

How many people fit in a barrel sauna?

Allow about 70cm of bench per adult sitting upright, with a bench on each side. A 1.8m barrel with 1.71m benches seats four, and a 2.5m barrel with 1.94m benches seats four comfortably or six at a squeeze.

Do barrel saunas leak?

A little water can get between the staves in heavy rain, and Hekla says it dries out once the sauna is heated. Keep the bands tight, the roof shingles sound and the timber treated, and choose thermowood if you want staves that take on less water.

What size heater does a barrel sauna need?

The 4-person barrels here ship with 6 to 9kW electric heaters, or a wood stove. Fonteyn fits a 4.5kW heater to all three of its sizes as standard, which suits the 4ft but leaves the 8ft short, so take the 6kW or 9kW upgrade on a longer barrel.

How much does a barrel sauna cost to run?

A 6kW heater at full power costs about £1.58 an hour at the 26.32p per kWh price cap for October to December 2026. The thermostat switches it off once the barrel is hot, so a session costs less than that.
