Our pick

1. Polar Recovery Cove

Thermowood cabin with outdoor shower

9.3/10

The Cove is the only sauna we found on sale in the UK with a shower built onto the cabin. It's a covered outdoor cold shower on the side of a 45mm thermowood sauna, under the same black aluminium roof, and Polar makes it with the shower on the left or the right, so you can turn it away from the house or the neighbours.

The sauna room is 200 × 196 × 218.5cm inside, 8.5m³, with alder benches for 4 to 8 people. It's £17,995.95 with a 9kW Harvia Cilindro or £18,995.95 with a 13kW Cozy wood-burning stove, and it's in stock on a 1 to 2 week delivery. Polar's fitters quote £1,500 to £2,000 to build it.

Polar's listing doesn't say how the shower connects, so ask before ordering whether it takes a hose feed or needs a plumbed supply, and plan where it drains. Add a 50A supply for the 9kW heater and a level base 3.2m wide that carries 1,500kg in total.

Buy it if

  • You want a cold rinse one step from the door
  • Groups of four to eight
  • Delivery within a fortnight

Skip it if

  • No water or drain near the spot
  • Your budget is under £10,000
  • You want an enclosed, private shower room

2. Summerhouse24 Nora Garden Sauna Cabin

70mm log cabin with sauna, shower room and garden room

8.6/10

The Nora is a garden building first: a 70mm Nordic spruce log cabin 7.58m by 3.3m with a 9m² garden room, a shower room, a 1.9m by 1.9m sauna and a 3m by 3m veranda under the roof. If you want to shower properly, sit down afterwards and use the space for something else on other days, this is the layout.

The kit is £13,700, and a Tylo Sense Sport 6 heater with stones adds £1,360, so £15,060 before the roof. Roof covering is an option too, from £990 for bitumen shingles, and Summerhouse24's fitting service is £2,470. The kit doesn't list any shower fittings, so the shower, the water feed and the drain are yours to plan and plumb.

At 2.7m tall it's over the 2.5m limit for buildings within 2m of a boundary, and permitted development doesn't cover verandas, so talk to your council before you order. Delivery is quoted at 3 to 5 weeks and the cabin carries a 5-year guarantee.

Buy it if

  • You want a proper shower room, not a rinse
  • A garden room as well as a sauna
  • A plot about 7.6m by 3.3m, away from boundaries

Skip it if

  • You want it up without involving the council
  • You don't want to plumb a shower
  • A small garden

3. Palmako Sanna L Three-Room Garden Sauna

44mm log cabin, three rooms

8.3/10

Palmako's Sanna L is a three-room log sauna: a steam room seating three on two levels of aspen bench, a 1.9m² room beside it that Palmako says can be a changing area or fitted with a shower, and a 5.4m² lounge at the front for cooling off between rounds. The walls are 44mm Nordic spruce logs, with an insulated ceiling.

£8,250 buys the kit with free delivery to mainland UK, including the doors, the window, floorboards and foundation joists. The heater and the roof covering aren't included, and nothing for the shower is either, so the shower room is a space you fit out yourself.

It's 2.61m tall with a pent roof, so it needs to stand more than 2m from a boundary to stay within permitted development, and it takes a plot 5m by 3.4m. Palmako backs it with a 5-year guarantee.

Buy it if

  • You want to fit your own shower
  • A lounge to sit in between rounds
  • Three people in the heat at a time

Skip it if

  • More than three in the steam room at once
  • You want the heater in the price

4. Finnmark Medium Barrel Sauna with Changing Room

Thermo-spruce barrel with changing room, electric

8.1/10

Finnmark's Medium Barrel with Changing Room splits a 2.25m-diameter thermo-spruce barrel into two: a 5.5m³ sauna room with two 1.635m benches for four, and a changing room at the front with its own benches and a storage box. There's no shower, but you undress and cool down out of the weather, which is half of what a shower room gives you.

It's £9,724.99 in black with a HUUM Drop 9kW heater and Wi-Fi controller, £9,904.99 with a Kuru 14 wood stove kit, or £8,266.99 with no heater. Delivery to mainland UK is free by Moffett forklift, and the kit is a self-build in a wooden crate.

Finnmark points out that the door has no lock by design and can blow open in strong wind, so it suggests weighting it with garden furniture in a gale. The timber carries a 2-year warranty.

Buy it if

  • Four users who want somewhere dry to change
  • A barrel shape and a black finish
  • You'd add a separate outdoor shower

Skip it if

  • You want a shower under the same roof
  • More than four people

Best for families

5. Layzee Living Hobbit Sauna, Medium

Thermowood cabin with changing room, electric

7.9/10

Layzee's Hobbit is a rounded thermowood sauna with a front room, bench and table ahead of the sauna room, and Layzee says the front room takes as many people as the sauna does. The Medium is 4.05m long, 2.4m deep and 2.3m tall, seats 4 to 6, and has 42mm walls.

It's £8,150 with a 6.8kW Harvia Cilindro, £8,350 with a Harvia M3 wood stove, and £8,395 or £8,950 with a terrace, with delivery included to most of the UK. There's no shower. Layzee sells a separate spruce shower cubicle with a 4kW water heater for £2,750, which brings the pair to £10,900 before plumbing.

Layzee describes the build as fairly technical and offers fitting at extra cost. At 2.3m tall it stays under the 2.5m boundary height.

  • A spot near a boundary, under 2.5m tall
  • Wood or electric at almost the same price

Water and drainage for a sauna shower

A sauna shower needs three things the sauna doesn't: a cold feed, a drain and a way to stop the pipe freezing. Of the five here, only the Cove arrives with the shower built. The Nora and the Sanna L give you a room to fit one, and the Finnmark barrel and the Hobbit have changing rooms with no water at all, which is also true of every other cabin in our outdoor sauna rankings.

The supply is regulated. Under the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999, every water system needs a device to stop water flowing back into the mains, and any fitting laid below ground needs enough cover to stop the water in it freezing. A plumber running a new outdoor supply should fit the backflow protection and bury the pipe deep enough as part of the job.

The waste is regulated too. The Building Regulations define water used for washing as foul water, so a shower drain belongs on the foul side of your drainage, not in a rainwater gully or a soakaway dug for the roof. That usually means a trench back to the house's foul drain, and it's worth pricing at the same time as the base for a garden sauna, because both involve digging.

Ways to get a cold rinse between rounds

There are four ways to add the cold part of a hot and cold routine, and they differ more in plumbing than in price.

A freestanding cubicle is the way to add a shower to a sauna you've already chosen, including the barrel saunas that have no room for one. Layzee's cubicle is 2.28m by 1.34m with its water heater in a cupboard at the back, and that 4kW heater adds to the electrical load, so plan it with the electrical work for the sauna.

Cabins with a shower room tend to be bigger buildings. The Nora is 2.7m tall with a veranda and the Sanna L is 2.61m tall, which brings the planning rules for garden saunas into play before you order.

Stopping a sauna shower freezing in winter

The shower is the part of the setup most likely to fail in January. The pipe and valve sit outside the heated room, and water left in them can freeze and split the fittings. The 1999 water fittings rules require fittings to be installed in a way that inhibits damage by freezing, which in practice comes down to three measures.

MeasureWhat it does
Isolating valve and drain point indoorsLets you shut off and empty the outdoor pipe before a frost
Insulation on exposed pipe and the valveSlows freezing between sessions
Supply pipe buried with enough coverKeeps the underground run above freezing

Winter is when a cold rinse feels best, so a supply you can drain after each session is worth more than lagging alone. A shower room inside the cabin, like the Nora's or the Sanna L's, shares walls with heated space and stays warmer than an open shower, though neither is heated when the sauna is off. An open shower like the Cove's is the most exposed of all, so drain it whenever frost is forecast.

Questions buyers ask

Do any outdoor saunas come with a built-in shower?

Yes, but very few. Of the saunas sold in the UK that we checked, only the Polar Cove has a shower built onto the cabin, a covered cold shower on one side. Others, like the Summerhouse24 Nora and the Palmako Sanna L, have a room where you can fit one.

Does an outdoor sauna shower need a drain?

Yes. The Building Regulations count water used for washing as foul water, so the shower should drain to the foul drain rather than a rainwater gully or a soakaway. Budget for a trench back to the house.

Can you use an outdoor shower in winter?

Yes, if the supply can be drained or protected from frost. Fit an isolating valve and drain point indoors, insulate exposed pipe and bury the supply deep enough that it can't freeze.

How much does an outdoor sauna with a shower cost?

The Polar Cove, with its shower built on, is £17,995.95. A separate shower cubicle adds about £2,750 to any sauna, and cabins with a shower room, like the £13,700 Summerhouse24 Nora, need a heater, roof covering and plumbing on top.
